Beyond the Boundaries of Vision: Chirico's Metaphysical Paintings in Montage Perspective |

Montage is an expressive technique that creates an overall coherence and emotional tension by editing different scenes, images or events together. However, the emergence of montage is not accidental. It is not only closely related to film technology, but also deeply influenced by people's daily thinking, aesthetic experience and traditional culture. Giorgio de Chirico, as a representative figure of "metaphysical painting" in the twentieth century, has profoundly influenced many art genres such as Dadaism and Surrealism. There is always a lingering sense of mystery in Chirico's paintings, with lonely buildings, expressionless models, plaster statues of different shapes, and long shadows, all these dreamlike and illusory elements fuse the real world with surreal space, and together they construct a visual field that transcends the boundaries of reality and space and time.
The purpose of this paper is to reinterpret Chirico's metaphysical paintings and explore how he realizes a new visual narrative with the help of montage. On the analysis of the works, it summarizes and generalizes the four specific applications of montage in his works, including temporal and spatial dislocation, decomposition and collage juxtaposition, and the effects they produce. It is found that Chirico's work not only visually transcends classical narrative techniques, but also ideologically provides a rich form of expression. This new framework of understanding extends the existing literature on Chirico's application of montage techniques and explores his work's strong connections to film, literature, and philosophy from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Chirico's artistic innovations had a profound impact on subsequent artistic developments, especially his contribution to surrealism. This study strengthens our understanding of key figures and concepts in the artistic transformations of the twentieth century, offering new insights into Chirico's artistic practice and his place in art history.
