This paper takes the black and white woodcut art of Zhao Yannian, a modern Chinese printmaking master, as the research object. By combing its artistic trajectory spanning more than half a century, it analyzes its artistic achievements and historical status in multiple dimensions. The study found that Zhao Yannian's printmaking creation reflected the distinct spirit of The Times and deep humanistic feelings. He created a strong printmaking language of personal style with his unique knife method of "putting a knife straight dry", black and white color block contrast, and strong line texture. From his early devotion to the left-wing cultural movement, to the national suffering during the Anti-Japanese War; from the socialist construction after the founding of new China, to shaping the image of Lu Xun during the "Cultural Revolution", Zhao Yannian wrote the symphony of personal struggle and changing times with his passionate artistic passion and superb creative skills. Whether in the clever use of the flat carving method, or from the traditional "anti-engraving" to the original "forward engraving" method, Zhao Yannian has made pioneering contributions to the innovation of artistic language, which greatly expanded the expression of modern Chinese printmaking. The image of ordinary workers he created is full of compassion for human nature and call for humanity, and the image of intellectuals is full of feelings of family and country, reflecting the profound humanistic care of artists. Zhao Yannian not only opened up a new realm of modern Chinese printmaking with his exquisite artistic skills, but also awakened the awakening consciousness of the public with his deafening humanistic cry.
