Lucian Freud, as one of the most influential realist painters in the 20th century, resolutely reshaped portrait and body painting in spite of external doubts when easel painting was full of crisis. However, there are many other influences on Freud's painting career are his plant works, which also show a unique artistic charm. Through Lucian Freud's works about plants, this paper expounds Freud's life background, the characteristics of plant works in different periods and the authenticity of breaking the traditional schema. The first chapter establishes the research significance of plant theme painting through the research results of Lucian Freud's related books, papers, journals and other documents. The second chapter makes a brief analysis of Freud's life background and the causes of his style, and expounds Freud's intimate relationship and special preference with plants through the expression of Freud's works. Chapter three explores the development of plant art in the history of Western art and the characteristics of Freud's plant works in different periods, including paper works, oil paintings, etchings and temporary works. The fourth chapter focuses on Freud's plant works to clarify its impact on the traditional classical schema, and pushes the reproduction of emotional intensity to the extreme, exploring more authentic expression than reality. Lucian Freud's plant work, despite its reputation as a true dissection, remains largely overlooked in the turbulent art history of the twentieth century. Through the entry point of Lucian Freud's works about plants, we can map out a more profound expression not only from the works themselves, but also from the small attributes of plants themselves.
